Printer types

To print labels, two types of printers are used, differing in printing technology.

How to choose thermal printer consumables?

The consumable material for the thermal printer is a thermally coated label tape. In trade and the service sector, two types of tape are most often used.

• eco label

• Roller winding. The length of the ribbon in the roller can be different, it should be selected depending on the characteristics of the printer. For desktop applications, 74 m ribbon is most commonly used. 300 m ribbon is also popular and is used for productive office printers. For industrial models, ribbon with a roll length of 450 m is used. The most popular option that is always available is ribbon with a winding of 74 m.
• Bushing size. The most popular size is 12.5 mm. This hub is used for 74m rolls and is suitable for most desktop printers. A tape with a winding length of 300 m can have a sleeve with a diameter of 12.7 or 25.4 mm. Rollers with 450 m winding have a 25.4 mm bushing.
• Tape width. It is chosen according to the size of the label. For example, for a 30mm wide label, a 40-57mm wide ribbon will do (to ensure print quality).

How to calculate the number of ribbon rolls for a label?

The distance between labels glued to the substrate is usually 2 mm. If you know the dimensions of the labels and the distance between them, you can calculate the length of the entire roller.

For example, label marking 58*40*600 is deciphered as follows:

• 58 mm - width;
• 40 mm - length;
• 600 - the number of labels of a given size in a roll.

The length of the roller, respectively, is calculated by the following formula:

(label length + label spacing)*number of labels per roll

In our example, the length of one label roller is (40+2)*600 = 25200 mm, or 25200/1000=25.2 m.

The ribbon footage is usually 74, 300 or 450 m. To calculate the required number of thermal label rolls, divide the ribbon footage by the label footage obtained above.

For our example, let's take a ribbon 300 m long: 300 m / 25.2 m = 11.9 rolls. The ratio of consumables for a printer with a ribbon of 300 m and a label of 58 * 40 * 600, therefore, will be 1:12, respectively.
